5. Develop our aquaculture, fisheries and other marine resources, while maintaining marine biodiversity and sustainability

New Zealand’s marine environment contains marine species and habitats not found elsewhere in the world and supports abundant resources such as wild fisheries and oil and gas, which make a significant contribution to our economy.  The Natural Resources Sector is focused on legislative changes that will allow greater certainty in the development of marine resources while protecting our unique oceanic environment. An operational review of the fisheries management system is also underway to ensure it is still fit-for-purpose and maintains sustainable fisheries for current and future generations.

In September 2015, the Government announced the creation of an ocean sanctuary in the unique and pristine Kermadec Region of the South Pacific. At 620,000 square kilometres, the sanctuary will be one of the world’s largest fully protected marine areas.
